The GW Instek PCS 1000I is a high precision current shunt meter with insulated output, which is also capable of taking voltage measurements with a 6 1/2 digits display. Because of the isolated output, this product can also be used in combination with an oscilloscope. The PCS 1000I offers USB and GPIB connectors for communicating data with a computer. This meter is able to maintain the high precision during long measuring sessions, where the temperature can fluctuate. This is made possible by the high stability and low temperature coefficients of the shunt.
Multimeters need a shunt resistor for current measurements in circuits. Shunt meters of other brands most of the time have a built-in shunt resistor for current measurement, but usually the precision of this resistor is lower, so an extra current meter is used to increase the precision. The PCS-1000I also has a built-in shunt resistor for current measurements and is able to simultaneously measure voltage and current in a very easy to connect circuits, as shown in the third picture above. Both multimeters and other shunt meters require at least two meters to measure voltage and current simultaneously. The advantages of the PCS-1000I are that less space is needed, it is easier to connect and if the measurement data requires communication with a computer, only one connection to the computer is needed instead of multiple connections with multimeters and other shunt meters.
